Through personalized instruction plans, tailored to each student’s unique intelligences, preferences, and talents, we foster an environment where all students are encouraged to explore their full potential.

At St. Gregory Hovsepian School, we recognize and celebrate the individuality of each student.

Our dedicated teachers are experts in applying differentiated instruction strategies, including varied Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels, and positive discipline principles to meet the diverse needs of our students. Moreover, our intervention specialists are always on hand to offer additional support, ensuring that every student receives the guidance they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Our curriculum and pedagogy extend beyond traditional academics, incorporating spirituality, positive and conscious discipline principles and monthly social-emotional learning themes such as kindness and self-awareness. This integration helps nurture our students’ emotional and spiritual development alongside their academic growth, fostering a holistic learning environment.

We are committed to nurturing not only scholars but also compassionate individuals who contribute positively to their community. Every element of our curriculum and pedagogical approach is aligned with this goal, ensuring our students grow to become well-rounded, proactive members of society.

CORE SUBJECTS

English Language Arts

St. Gregory Hovsepian School's English Language Arts curriculum is designed to align with California Standards while embracing our school's STEAM-focused educational philosophy. Our unique curriculum features a balanced integration of literary content, catering to diverse student interests and academic needs. From Kindergarten through fifth grade, we enhance our robust curriculum with advanced digital platforms: Smarty Ants is used in grades K-2 to build foundational reading and writing skills, while grades 3-8 engage with Actively Learn, facilitating deeper comprehension, writing, and critical thinking skills. In addition, writing is embedded into the curriculum across all subjects to ensure that students develop their writing skills while enhancing their understanding and engagement.

Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum, powered by Big Ideas Math, aligns with our commitment to providing a STEAM curriculum and academic rigor, while also embracing a whole child approach to education. At St. Gregory Hovsepian school, we recognize and nurture individual potential through differentiated instruction. Our math curriculum caters to all students, helping high achievers to explore complex concepts and reach their full potential while ensuring that students who need extra support receive tailored intervention. From kindergarten onward, our math curriculum fosters mathematical reasoning and equips students with advanced skills, enabling them to succeed in our school's UC-approved Advanced Algebra course in 8th grade.

Social Studies

At St. Gregory Hovsepian School, our Social Studies curriculum spans Kindergarten through eighth grade, integrating history and diverse societies into our STEAM program. From K-2, our proprietary approach ignites curiosity and builds foundational knowledge. In grades 3-8, students use the Actively Learn platform for interactive learning and real-time assessments. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive Social Studies education that prepares students to be informed global citizens, enriching their understanding of the world and its cultures. Each month, students in grades K-4 participate in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) workshop that aligns with themes such as Black History Month and Disability Awareness Month. These workshops are designed to foster an inclusive understanding of the various contributions and challenges within our society. At the heart of our curriculum lies experiential learning. Field trips, such as visits to museums, historical sites, and both East Coast and West Coast destinations, play a pivotal role in our teaching approach. They provide students with firsthand experiences that bring classroom topics to life.

Science

Science at St. Gregory Hovsepian School engages students to become curious problem finders and innovative problem solvers. The curriculum implements a standards-based (NGSS), hands-on curriculum throughout all grades. Students in grades K-4 engage in a proprietary STEAM curriculum daily, and students in grades 5-8 receive science instruction through Science Dimensions from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Additionally, Students in grades 5-8 spend a day at the AGBU Innovation Studios maker space, where cutting-edge technology and Armenian culture converge in a project-based learning environment. This creative curriculum fosters the development of engaged, solution-oriented youth, encouraging them to actively shape their identity and culture. Middle school students also participate in science fairs, often progressing to events like the L.A. County Science and Engineering Fair and the Armenian Science and Engineering Olympiad, where many achieve top placements.

Armenian Language, History and Religion

At St. Gregory Hovsepian School, our Armenian Language Arts curriculum encompasses grades K-8, employing the Mer Lezoun "Our Language" textbook series developed by the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America. Supplementary materials such as Hayots Badmootyoon and Hye Mshagouyt enhance the learning experience at specific grade levels, addressing the diverse linguistic needs of our students. Recognizing the varied language proficiency levels within our community, we offer an Armenian Language Development (ALD) program, including targeted interventions for students needing extra help, delivered within the classroom or through pull-out sessions. Our Armenian Language Arts department fosters a deep appreciation for Armenian culture through vibrant celebrations, performances, field trips, guest speakers, authors, and cultural events. This comprehensive approach nurtures Armenian speakers who are proud of their heritage and equipped with the language skills and cultural knowledge to thrive in a diverse world.

Religion

Students at St. Gregory Hovsepian School engage in weekly Bible-centered character development classes that instill strong moral values and ethical principles. Additionally, students gather for a brief sermon weekly, focusing on spiritual and character development issues introduced by the parish priest, which fosters a sense of community and spiritual growth. Monthly visitations by the Archbishop or Diocesan priests, as well as annual discussions at the Diocese, further enrich students' understanding of spiritual matters and offer them diverse perspectives on their faith. These activities not only deepen their religious knowledge but also encourage them to embody the teachings in their daily lives.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Gardening

Our weekly gardening class provides students with hands-on experiences that deepen their grasp of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), nurturing critical thinking and practical skills in a stimulating natural environment. Guided by a seasoned Master Gardener specializing in garden-based nutrition education, the program goes beyond planting seeds; it cultivates ideas, fosters growth, and shapes the minds of tomorrow's leaders and innovators. This initiative underscores our dedication to a holistic, STEAM-focused education that equips students to think critically and creatively across all domains of learning.

VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS

Through engaging and dynamic performances, students not only enhance their musical skills but also connect with their roots, creating a harmonious blend of education and cultural enrichment.
